We Are Georgia Aquarium

Inspiring awareness & preservation of ocean and aquatic animals worldwide

Georgia Aquarium, located in Atlanta, Georgia, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that contains more than 10 million gallons of water. Georgia Aquarium is a scientific institution that entertains and educates, features exhibits and programs of the highest standards and offers engaging and exciting guest experiences that promote the conservation of aquatic biodiversity throughout the world. As a leader in aquatic research and exceptional animal care, we are dedicated to fostering a deeper appreciation for our ocean and the animals that call it home.

Alongside other accredited facilities, our team conducts crucial research by working with animals both in human care and in their natural habitats to improve husbandry methods, develop innovative and exciting new exhibits, contribute to the understanding of the underwater world and apply new discoveries to the conservation of aquatic life. Every day, researchers in the Aquarium’s exhibits and labs are learning more about marine life in order to develop new methods of animal care and veterinary medicine. By combining field research with the study of on-site animals in a controlled environment, the Aquarium is contributing to the advancement of human knowledge in the area of animal science.

Welcome Aquanauts-In-Training!

Aquanaut Adventure is a unique experience that allows parents and kids to learn about aquatic life during an expedition through a variety of immersive environments. The gallery offers seven different routes, each with seven different adventures, providing multiple opportunities for guests to come back and complete all of the challenges. Only five of the seven routes have to be completed to receive Georgia Aquarium Aquanaut certification. These challenges engage guests in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM)-related activities.

As Aquanauts-in-training, participants will explore fresh water and marine habitats, scientific research, how animals thrive in extreme environments, and even catch a glimpse into what it’s like to have a career in aquatic and marine sciences. The gallery instills a sense of appreciation for our oceans, lakes and rivers of our planet and an understanding of the organisms that thrive there.

Dive Beneath the Icy Waters

Cold ocean waters teem with fish and marine mammals, just as they do in Cold Water Quest. Beneath our waves curious animals like Australian weedy sea dragons, garibaldi damselfish and Japanese spider crabs hang among rocky ledges and kelp forests. This gallery is home to some of the world’s coldest ocean animals, including sea otters, penguins and more.

Our Southern sea otter exhibit in Cold Water Quest has doubled in size and now includes a deck for trainer-animal interactions and a sneak peek window that shows behind-the-scenes. The African penguin exhibit features more than 25 nesting areas integrated into naturalistic rockwork equipped with a state-of-the-art lighting system that mimics the natural light cycle from twilight to moonlight. Acrylic tunnels and pop-up windows, built into the exhibit, allow guests to come face-to-face with their feathered favorites. Last but not least, our beluga whale exhibit contains subarctic-temperature water as well as harbor seals — gregarious ambassadors for marine conservation efforts.

Venture Under the Boardwalk

Truist Pier 225 features the charismatic California sea lion in our Under the Boardwalk presentation. In this show, guests are virtually transported to the coast of California for a close-up look at this incredible species. Trainers interact with these social pinnipeds while educating guests on the dangers they face in their natural environment, as well as key environmental factors that impact them.

In March of 2015, an unusually high number of sea lion pups were stranded on California beaches during an Unusual Mortality Event (UME), a sad phenomenon reaching a record-breaking high. Georgia Aquarium made a home for two pups from this UME, rescued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that were deemed non-releasable. These two pups were named Jupiter and Neptune by Georgia Aquarium’s fans, and they serve as sea lion ambassadors to educate the public about the species’ challenges. Jupiter and Neptune joined four other rescued sea lions in Truist Pier 225.
