The fun is not just for your students!
Teachers can immerse themselves in learning and gain invaluable content through hands-on experiences. Our professional development opportunities are designed for teachers to experience firsthand some of the ecosystems found across the world and in our own backyard.
Teacher workshops are held throughout the year. Under each workshop, we have noted the month when the workshop will occur. For more information about a particular workshop (dates and applications), please check our Web site about 2-3 months prior to the workshop for details.
Learning Ocean Science through Ocean Exploration
During this two-part ocean exploration workshop, teachers will be introduced to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Ocean Exploration curriculum. The curriculum is designed to bring the excitement of bioluminescent corals, deep vent worms and tropical underwater volcanoes to the classroom through inquiry-based activities in biology, earth, physical and marine sciences.
Workshop occurs in October and March.
ROV Workshop (1 PLU)
Looking to link technology with ocean exploration and research? During this hands-on workshop, teachers build their own Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) from PVC pipe and other materials while learning about ROV technology and its use in research, monitoring and exploration of national marine sanctuaries.
Workshop occurs in February.
Rivers to Reef (3 PLU’s)
Dates: June 8-13 and June 22-27, 2008
Teachers wade into the water world as they learn about watersheds, water quality, current aquatic issues and river and reef ecosystems. This week-long workshop takes teachers from the headwaters of the Ocmulgee River to Gray's Reef, National Marine Sanctuary, 20 miles offshore. Click here for more information and the application.
