Zebra Shark Pup Webcam

Follow the journey of this little zebra shark as it emerges from its egg case, also called a mermaid’s purse. We have several live egg cases on exhibit in our Ocean Voyager gallery for you to see when you visit Georgia Aquarium in person.

As you watch, you will see the pup moving about inside the egg case. The dark spot near the bottom of the egg case is the yolk sac, where the pup is getting all of its nourishment before it emerges. After hatching, this pup will display dark coloration with pale stripes, lending to the name, “zebra shark.” As it matures, its coloration changes to tan with dark spots. This shark can grow to a maximum length of 12 feet (3.7 m). Currently this mermaid’s purse is approximately 10 inches (25.4 cm) long.
