The forceps butterflyfish is found all over the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian and Easter islands. They can also be seen in the eastern Pacific in Baja California, Mexico, Revillagigedo and Galapagos Islands. The butterflyfish can most often be found in exposed seaward reefs and lagoons.
This fish typically feeds on hydroids, fish eggs and small crustaceans. It prefers tube feet and pedicellaria of echinoderms.
